The department of Chemistry seeks to fill the full-time,
permanent position of Manager of Laboratory Services (UCP 7).
Duties include coordinating all lab equipment and supplies for
department courses; prepares budget requests for laboratory supplies
and equipment, monitors and approves expenses with in approved
budget limits; supervisor of professional staff and teaching assistants
in the teaching stockroom; resolution of problems encountered
by other lab instructors; assist with scheduling of classes each
semester; design, develop and test laboratory experiments and
analyze procedures for intended results; author lab handouts and
manuals, develops lecture and laboratory demonstrations for use
in all courses; prepare laboratory solutions, reagents, media
and/or other laboratory apparatus as needed; assist with assigning
Teaching Assistants to selected lab sections; and ensuring federal
and state safety procedures are followed for the safe disposal
of chemical waste generated by teaching labs.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree
in Chemistry, prior experience in research and teaching laboratories,
ability to interact with faculty, supervisory ability and sound
knowledge of principles of Chemistry and hazardous waste safety
procedures.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree
or Ph.D. in Chemistry.

Full Position Description
Manager of Laboratory Services - UCP VII
Department of Chemistry
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Under the general direction of the Department
of Chemistry Head, is responsible for coordinating and providing
technical support for undergraduate laboratory instruction in
the Chemistry Department.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
1. Assigns and coordinates use of all lab equipment and supplies
for all department courses.
2. Responsible for overall operation of teaching
stockroom including ordering and purchasing lab equipment and
supplies, processing all necessary paperwork; maintaining appropriate
records and following up on all related purchasing and shipping
problems.
3. Assists in the resolution of problems encountered
by other lab instructors and makes alterations as needed.
4. Supervises professional staff in the teaching
stockroom with responsibility for ensuring coverage between the
hours of 8a.m. and 5p.m. as well as evenings when labs are taking
place in the building; also supervises, trains and evaluates lab
assistants, lab aides and student workers who staff lab courses;
recommends hiring, assigns workloads and determines work schedules.
5. Assists with the scheduling of classes each
semester.
6. Assists faculty in the design, development
and testing of laboratory experiments and analyzes procedures
for intended results, as established by other faculty members;
interfaces with other faculty members in coordination and implementation
of upper-division laboratory courses.
7. Authors lab handouts and lab manuals, with
responsibility for accuracy of information and clarity of theory,
principles and procedures to be demonstrated; makes arrangements
for copies for student purchase; develops lecture and laboratory
demonstrations for use in all courses.
8. In consultation with faculty and lab instructors,
evaluates the effectiveness of lab experiments to determine student
comprehension of theory and principles; makes modifications as
appropriate.
9. Prepares budget requests for laboratory supplies
and equipment; monitors and approves expenses within approved
budget limits.
10. Maintains, monitors, insures proper security
of and performs minor repairs on scientific lab equipment and
is responsible for all maintenance contracts for such equipment.
11. Responsible for ensuring that procedures related
to safe disposal of chemical waste generated by teaching labs
are followed; monitors compliance with proper disposal procedures
according to departmental, federal and state safety procedures.
12. Determines equipment, supplies and physical
set up for each lab exercise.
13. Prepares laboratory solutions, reagents, media
and/or other laboratory apparatus, as needed to carry out experiment.
14. Performs special projects as required or assigned.
15. Assigns Teaching Assistants to selected lab
sections; writes performance evaluations and makes recommendation
to faculty member.
16. Supervises the cleanup and disassembly of
laboratory exercises; assists as needed.
17. Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor's degree in Chemistry.
2. Prior experience in research and teaching laboratories.
3. Ability to interact with faculty.
4. Supervisory ability.
5. Sound knowledge of principles of Chemistry
and of hazardous waste safety procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
